Pottery design

The dynamic forms created on the potter's wheel, the organic shapes born from raising the clay, and the graceful forms created by soft clay—all of these are expressions unique to pottery, born from the dialogue between the material and the artist. Furthermore, the vibrant colors created by painting and the color changes produced by firing metal are also unique charms of pottery.

By breaking down each step of the pottery-making process and reconstructing it based on the artist's interpretation, clay and porcelain are elevated from mere materials to expressions.

In this exhibition, we aim to share the diverse forms of expression that can only be born from the material of ceramics.

Philosophy of Utsuwa: Utsuwa that Speak

Generally, the concept of utsuwa, whether made by an artist or mass-produced, revolves around its functionality and practicality.

On the other hand, within ceramic expression, some artists do not necessarily create with functionality in mind, but instead choose the form of the “utsuwa” as a medium to shape concepts and ideas.

This exhibition aims to move beyond the conventional boundaries of the “utsuwa,” exploring methods of self-expression that emerge from it and considering the expanding possibilities and significance of form and conceptual thinking within ceramics.

- Focusing on works from the Ushida Collection -

What the participating artists in this exhibition have in common is that, despite their diverse backgrounds in terms of age, gender, place of origin, and the circumstances and values that led them to become involved with pottery, they are all strongly drawn to the material of "clay" and have continued to engage with it. Furthermore, while they are moved by the charm of the material during the creative process, they also face frustrations and conflicts when things don't go as planned, but they continue to create as if in dialogue with the clay.

This exhibition focuses on the allure of ceramics, born from the materials that each artist has pursued as a common thread, while taking into account their diverse backgrounds.

We hope that visitors will be able to experience the charm of "ceramic form" that each artist is so particular about through their works.
